KentuckyWoodsman 1 Posted April 14, 2009 I was looking at some military surplus on eBay and saw these and was thinking they would be a great base for a survival system. http://img.auctiva.com/imgdata/3/5/7/6/4/6/webimg/80219171_tp.jpg Has anyone tried this yet? Machine 0 Posted April 14, 2009 I wear a similar vest from time to time when I am in the woods. If I am hiking more than training, I like it. That way I can carry some gear, but am not weighed down by a pack. Also, if I am just going out for a short time (usually alone) I wear it. If I am with a group or going out longer....I still like my pack. Vests are good in many ways though. Start with a cheap on and see if you like it. I picked one up at Majorsurplus.com for $30.00. It does have draw backs.....like it is HOT! Also, you can't carry as much gear. It's great for geocaching.....put the GPS in the from pocket....some water....bug spray....and you are good to go. Tatonka 0 Posted April 14, 2009 KW, You could use that or any number of others to build yourself a vest type kit. Or you could use fishing vests also. With a fishing vest you have a large pocket in back of you to hold a tarp it could also carry a hydration bladder and has many pockets to use for all your gear. Or you can go into the specialized vests that makers make. http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/index/index-display.jsp?id=cat370015&navAction=jump&navCount=1&cmCat=netcon&parentType=category&parentId=cat20166 http://www.specialforces.com/store/catalog/category_302_SO_Tech_Tactical_Gear_Military__Police_Vests_page_1.html http://go-armynavy.com/index.php/vmchk/survival/usaf-pilot-s-survival-vest-/-molle-m72.html

Muddy Pete 0 Posted August 4, 2009 Ron Hood did some testing on the Scottevest. The impression that I got was that it was a good urban vest, but uncomfortable for outdoors trips.

shrek 0 Posted August 4, 2009 This is the one I use. I like it, but it gets hot so I'll use it mostly in the fall when the weather starts to cool off. http://shop.bangalla.com/product.sc?categoryId=25&productId=

RovingArcher 0 Posted August 11, 2009 I wear a Woolrich travelers vest from time to time when woodswalking. It carries a nice mix of gear, without the pillsbury doughboy look, is lite weight and has a larger pocket in the rear that holds a USGI poncho or small tarp for shelter if I need it. Problem with it is, if it's warm out, I sweat like crazy, so I usually will only wear it in late fall and winter.
MrCoffee 0 Posted August 14, 2009 I posted an artcile from a guy who based his vest on a filson wool vest, and it was a very very complete setup, surprised me how well it wore. I have a photographers vest I could use, but I do not like the overall bulk of it... The orginial site I got it from is pretty much down, but the archive site is still operational. http://outdoors.magazine.free.fr/spip.php?article171&var_recherche=Vest&var_recherche=Vest http://outdoors.magazine.free.fr/spip.php?article172&var_recherche=Vest&var_recherche=Vest Good read, both parts one and two..
