What makes a good bedroll or ground blanket?

Recommended Posts

Do you use a bedroll as part of your pack?   Maybe a throw-down or ground blanket?

I've used the hardware store ground cloths and tarps before but I'm looking for a good quality bedroll.

What do you suggest and why?

What I need:

Able to be rolled and re-used

Water proof or able to be sprayed water resistant

Some level of protection from conduction heat loss or gain

Modified to add: Lighweight

Thanks,

Gandar

I just purchased a 7x9 canvas tarp. Thats what I used to use with a roll up foam mattress. However both of these are not good for packs because of their bulk and weight. Most of our camping in Illinois wasnt far from a road because theres a road around every section of ground all over the state.

Both sound good. I like the old-timely feel of wool so I might go with that and roll it up trek style with gear included in the packs stead.

6x8 tarp large enough to fold over and use as a cover.

Thermarest pad - can be switched out for trash bags full of pine needles.

fleece blanket for insulation.

Thanks MP,

The thermarest pads sure are nice lookin' but too expensive and single purpose for me.  Fleece blanket sure sounds nice if I can keep it dry.
