bobimbob 0 Posted November 28, 2006 This morning we faced with crusted frozen rain, got me to thinking as this is getting frequent nowdays, what could I do to maintain my and my families footing? Bigblue showed in the snowshoe section crampons but something less aggressive for casual walks in and around town.
bobimbob 0 Posted November 28, 2006 I thought of what they did in the older days, using straw as a platform like a sandle tied to the shoe/boot. Straw is abrasive in such situation plenty of grip.
bobimbob 0 Posted November 28, 2006 Another thought hit me, wrapping manila, hemp, sisal twine or cordage around shoe/boot should have the desired effect. Now, I will be looking at rubber based shoe/boot cleats for normal wear

MrCoffee 0 Posted December 1, 2006 I havent looked recently but a few years ago I went to a Army Surplus store and found slip on rubber shoe covers that had little metal cleats in the bottom of them. They were designed for Police officers to use in bad weather. I still have a pair in each of our cars and extras for the kids. I will have to dig them out and get a brand name, cause they work great.
