Wood ashes from your fireplace, camp fire or wood burner make a great thing to put on ice. It works immediately and better then any thing I have found.

you can also soak them in water and make lye, useful for removing hair from animal hides and for making soap and laundry detergent.

I went to college at Central College in Pella, Iowa, where they have a tulip festival every spring. They did not put salt on the streets and it would kill off a lot of the tulips plants in beds along the streets. They would take the ash from the local power plant and put it on the streets instead.  It did not melt the ice like salt but gave plenty of traction.
